Hard Maple Burl Humidor

Made entirely from exhibition-grade Hard Maple and exhibition-grade Hard Maple Burl, this custom desktop humidor is a veritable jewel with its extravagant figuring and high-gloss “piano” finish. Its extraordinary beauty more than compensates for its unassuming proportions. Measuring a mere ten-inch square by four-and-one-half inch high, this stunning humidor easily outshines its larger counterparts. 

A single slab of hard maple burl and a small plank of highly figured hard maple lumber were used to create this striking humidor. 

The top and bottom panels are each custom made five-layer vacuum laminates. Each panel is comprised of a one-quarter inch thick three-layer hard maple cross-grain laminate core with two one-eighth inch thick exposed layers of hard maple burl vacuum laminated to opposing faces of the core. The elaborate construction of these half inch thick panels assures that each will remain unaffected by the extreme temperature and humidity gradients typically encountered in humidor service.    

The top panel is framed with a solid maple molding and mortised into the upper edge of the outer frame. The bottom panel was also mortised into the outer frame flush to the bottom edge.

The outer frame was fashioned entirely from solid highly figured hard maple. It was joined at each corner with full height case splines of contrasting African mahogany.  Mortises were cut into the inside of the frame to accommodate the top and bottom panels.

A pair of Brusso solid brass precision quadrant hinges were hand-fitted into the outer case. These premium hinges will maintain the precise alignment of top and bottom throughout the long life of this humidor. 

A pair of custom brass-encased magnetic closures help keep proper alignment of the top and bottom and aid in keeping the humidor firmly closed. 

The high-gloss piano-grade finish required sixteen coats of clear polyacrylic with hand leveling between each two coats. The final coat was hard dried for ten days, hand leveled, and polished to the final high gloss. 

The humidor’s interior is completely lined with solid weep-free Spanish cedar. The humidor is fitted with a pair of felt tipped moveable dividers, also of weep-free Spanish cedar. 

Humidification is provided by two 60-gram Boveda® packs held in a full-width Spanish cedar holder fitted into the humidor’s top. A SensorPush™ HT.w wireless hygrometer/thermometer provides continuous accurate monitoring of the humidor’s interior.
